I'm wearing a school dress so a girl in Africa can wear one too.
Hi. I'm Sarah.
I love to read books. I love to write blogs. I love to run. I love being empowered to make the decisions that affect my life. And I am about to turn 30.

I ran the Sydney Marathon on September 16th - which happened to also be my 30th Birthday. I wanted to turn 30, being fit, healthy and in control of my life. Things which would not have been possible without a good education.
Knowledge and education change the world and no-one should miss out on this. By wearing a school dress for the Sydney Marathon I am going to help give girls in Sierra Leone an education. The school days are never over, and for girls in Africa it has only just begun.
I turned 30, being hot, sweaty, red-faced and thanks to you, being proud to have helped share the joy of education with deserving girls.
Thanks for supporting me and making my birthday a memorable one!
PS I might also head to the pub, ride my bike around the city and do some training runs in a dress. I promise to provide pictures and updates of all my Doing it in a Dress activities here.
For my birthday I didn't want presents or champagne. Instead, I ran a marathon in a dress and awesome people donated money to help send girls to school in Sierra Leone.

I ran a marathon in a school dress.
Yesterday was the big day. And I made it. Phew. I was thinking it would be rather awkward if I didn't. Would I have to give you all your lovely donations back?? Thankfully, my little legs didn't stop turning over and they propelled me the whole 42.2 kms. Good legs. So I don't have to worry about the details in my returns policy.

I have decided that 42kms is a really long way to run. Especially on your birthday. The day after you fly back from the United States. In a school dress. But knowing that I had the support of family, friends and complete strangers got me over the line. Knowing that together we had already raised enough money to send 5 girls back to school helped block out the lactic acid screaming for my legs to stop. So I made it. Woohoo!
I did pay for it though. I am hobbling around today. Feeling every bit of my 30 years and more... But I sort of like it. It means my body worked hard and I had a crack. Also the dress didn't chafe. So if anyone needs a school dress for a marathon just let me know. I have the perfect one!

The dress (and me hit the beach)
I found out the dress works well on the beach. Light cotton material, breathes well and shows a little leg. Ticks the boxes for the perfect beach dress.

My new friends over iPhoneography oz liked it too. So, they asked me to write a guest blog for them and they profiled me over on their site. Exciting. Go check it out.

A days work... in a school dress.
As a proud member of the Yammerati team - today Katy and myself rocked our school dresses in true Do It In A Dress style - at work.

PS I did want to post all these photos in one update but this blogging system only allows for one image per post :-(
But yep - this was also on September 3rd. Busy first day out for the school dress!

First day in my school dress.
Today the dress got a good trial. I really tested it out. I ran into work in the dress. I had a cafe breakfast in the dress. I worked in the dress. I ran home from work in the dress. And now the dress is making friends with the washing machine. Ticks all around. Perfectly tailored and ready for a marathon. What a school dress. Awesome.

All set.
So I now have the perfect school dress for a little 42k jog.
My Action Kit arrived - and boy do I feel ready for action. Posters, badges, stickers and the dress. On recommendation, I ordered large to allow for some wiggle room and alterations where necessary. Good advice.
After a few rounds of fittings, some pinning, some cutting and some motherly love, the Singer worked its magic.

My school has no sleeves, nice low chafe-free underarms and is well above the knee. It is now ready to be put to the test....

Almost have the perfect marathon school dress...
After a fruitless dress searching weekend which involved Dimmies, Target and numerous op shops I started the week sans-school dress. Feeling slight deflated I put out a cry for help on twitter. And my belief in the value of the community was reinforced as my twitter pals gave their ideas and tips immediately... Awesome.

So many options... the dress search continues.

What goes with hot pink?
So yesterday I bought some new shoes. After a 10 year partnership with Asics, I dumped them and invested in some Nikes. I feel like a bit of a traiter and am slightly disappointed that I look like a true chick runner with hot pinks shoes, but that's what happens when you shop at the factory outlet, there is limited choice and are on a tight time frame.

Three weeks to wear in some new shoes for the marathon is not long. I took them for an easy 10k last night in the beautiful Melbourne weather (read: rain and gale force winds) and they feel good. I am sure hot pink goes faster too right?
So now I just need to find a school dress that goes with my new shoes. That is the mission for this weekend. I am thinking the traditional blue or green would be nice? Then I need to put it through my sewing machine and hope it comes out the other side, fitting perfectly and with no ability to chafe...
